概要

didn’t know what had exploded. But it was strange that I didn’t feel fear atall.I thought I had to do something and tried to stand up. But I fell downon my backside.I became hopeless and sat down. Many injured people were passing infront of me like a big wave. In the opposite direction, which was towards thecenter of Hiroshima City, the rescues by truck or by cargo were passing infront of me one after another. They were carrying hot rice balls to theirdestination. One of them gave me a big triangle rice ball with pickles, saying“Eat this and don’t ever give up! A truck will come to rescue you.” Thoughthey encouraged me, I could not feel like eating it. What I really wanted thenwas to drink water. Without any reason, I decided to stay there for a while.I did not know how many hours had passed. It was getting so dark.“What should I do from now?” I faintly asked myself and started to walk tothe Gion area.I didn’t remember how long I had walked for. I thought it wasimpossible for me to walk any more, and wanted to lay down on the floor. And just then I met a policeman. And I was asked by him, “Your flash burnsseem to be terrible. Where are you going? ”I replied “My destination is Mukaihara. But I can not walk any more.Do you know where I can rest and sleep.” He said “Hold on to my shoulders, Iwill take you to the nearest air-raid shelter.” He asked me “What school doyou belong to? You have a mark of the student group for national devotion onyour clothes. ” “Hiroshima Commercial High School.” I replied. In the air-raid shelter, there was nobody then. But it took me a long timeto sit down in the darkness. On the floor, there must have been a straw mat.I tried to lie on my back. My burnt body hurt. But finally I fell into a deepsleep.I heard someone talking vaguely. It seemed to be a conversationbetween the policeman and a doctor. Though I couldn’t understand what theywere talking about, it sounded to be something like “A student mobilized forlabor was seriously burnt and could not stand up, so please see him.” I wasnot sure about anything, but according to my faint memory, maybe I wasgiven an injection. I heard someone talk. “He is in a serious condition now.Without any treatment, he will die. We should take him to a hospital or acare center if it is possible.”
