let him drink water, telling him to save some for my son.He told me that he had been carried on a board and left there after hehad had his injury treated in the Red Cross Hospital. He said, “Hajime and Islept in the streetcar together last night. I went to The Red Cross Hospitaland got my injury taken care of today. So, he must be there, too.”Leaving him where he was, I repeatedly said, “Be sure to stay herewithout moving anywhere. I will surely take you home with me.” After I leftthere, I managed to get to the hospital. There were some people who had justhad a baby, some who were dead, and a lady whose hand was torn.At the entrance, a boy with the tag written “the first grade in Kenkou”was lying dead. As he looked like Hajime, I thought it was him. However, when I looked closely, I noticed it wasn’t. Faces of all of the people were soswollen that I could hardly recognize them. So, I untied their guetres to findout if they were my son, wishing one of them was. Although I looked forHajime all over the hospital, he wasn’t there. So, I abandoned the search and went back to where Susumu had been, thinking of taking him home with me. However, I was shocked to find that hewasn’t there. He was nowhere to be seen.It was getting dark. There was nothing I could do about it, so I decided togo home. As soon as I got back and told his parents about him, they hurriedto where he had been. But they were unable to find him that night. On the following day, they headed there again. Sadly, what they saw washis dead body laid on a board. As I told him not to move from there, he probably asked someone tocarry him there before he died. It may have been his last will.I also went to school, expecting to get some information about my son.But it was in vain. The teacher there on that day just said to me, “I can’t tellyou anything about your son since the teacher who led a party of students onthat day hasn’t come back yet….” “There is nothing I can say until he comesback.” I was a little irritated by his attitude because I managed to get thereall the way from my house. Maybe he hadn’t grasped the terrible state in thetown yet. I thought it was a waste of time to stay there, so I returned to thecenter of the city.I told myself I must search for my son by myself. I’m sure that the schoolhad difficulty collecting information of every student, so I didn’t think it wasa good idea to rely totally on school.
