“I’ll do my best to live.” (頑張って生きて行こう) (267)Seiko Ikeda (池田精子)On August 6th, the day of the Atomic Bombing, I was a 12 year-old, 1stgrade mobilized girl student. I was tidying up deserted houses atTsurumi-cho, 1.5km away from the hypocenter. I saw an intense flash oflight, the explosion and I was blown over by the force of it.When I became conscious, my hair was frizzled with the heat of theexplosion and my clothes were burned and almost disintegrated. Mywhole body got burned and I was naked. I could not care about mynakedness. The only thing I could do was to escape, screaming andasking for help. I escaped in the same direction as other people did. Therewere many dead bodies on the roadside, just like fish burnt black.I strode across or avoided those dead bodies or seriously injured people, and walked on. I crawled up Mt. Hijiyama, walked through the town ofDanbara, and went over the Taisho Bridge. Fortunately a truck passingby picked me up and took me to the hospital at Kaita-cho. After treatment,I was put to sleep in the back room. I may have been relieved and I fellasleep without realizing it. I noticed my face had swelled up. So I couldhardly open my eyes and I could open my mouth only a little. My father came to the hospital with a neighbor to pick me up. Theyloaded a two wheeled cart with bedding for me. However, my father couldnot find me, because my appearance had changed a lot. He had to look forme among wounded people, shouting in a loud voice, “Seiko, your Dad hascome to pick you up.” Hearing his voice, I instinctively threw myself intomy father’s arms, crying and trying hard to open my closed eyes. After coming home, all the hospitals were filled with patients and thedoctors were so busy that they couldn’t visit me. So I had to continue mytreatment myself at home. My father wiped the pus flowing out fromwounds twice a day. The way to treat my burn marks was to put onointment which was made by dissolving powdered zinc oxide with castoroil. It was such an awful pain as to strip off my raw skin. I wanderedabout on the verge of death with a high fever, diarrhea, and vomiting forabout ten days.About half a year passed after contamination, I was able to go toschool. But while I rode on the train, I became so nervous about peoplelooking at me that I stopped going to school. I didn’t know who I could
