hand. We could bear the summer season somehow, but in winter snow felldown beside my bed, which still remains with me as an unforgettablememory. We’ve never found my son’s body, so we, like most other parents then, havebeen waiting impatiently for our son to come back suddenly from somefaraway place. We have cherished this hope for 30 years. Thus, difficult situations had continued day after day since the A-bombdropping. What was engraved in my mind most deeply was the news on theImperial broadcast announcing the end of World War Ⅱon August 15. Iwas quite at a loss when I thought of the future of Japan. When the Occupation Forces came to Hiroshima, women and girl studentstrembled with fear for a while, but to our relief, there was little trouble. My wife has been afraid of the anxiety of the A-bomb disease for 30 yearssince the end of the War. She has reached old age ( 68 years old ) and dependson doctors and medicine. My other children were behind the house, whichblocked the straight rays of the A-bomb. Luckily they aren’t suffering fromthe aftereffect of the atomic bomb.Since then, we underwent unspeakable sufferings of food, clothing andshelter. After the shortage of supplies during the postwar days, we had avery hard time because of the incredible rise in prices. We kept ourselvesclinging to the strong desire to survive.Time and again, we used to complain, if we had died then, we wouldn’thave led a bitter life of difficulties and cares like this. Life knows no boundsfrom the top to the bottom. There are so many people of different painfulbackgrounds. When I think of my son, who couldn’t realize his dream and became asacrifice for the nation, I feel deeply depressed, but brace myself to pull out ofit.Today, living costs are very high. Human feelings seem as thin as paper. The environments of life are getting worse. We, the war surviving familieswith similar anxieties have to help one another in unison. We’d like to enjoythe rest of our lives in peace and offer our heartfelt consolation to the souls ofthose sacrificed to the atomic bomb.Father (the late): Otowa Tokuo (the ex?vice?president)Mother : Otowa Kiyoko (born in August 10, Meiji 40, 1907)First Son: Otoha Masahiko (born in November 6, Showa 7, 1932)the 1st grader of Hiroshima Municipal Shipbuilding TechnicalHigh SchoolAtomic?bombed Site : KakomachiPublished in Heisei 19, 2007
