mobilized students who got wounded and lost their hopes and dreams. Thenation ordered them to join the volunteer labor service and they got woundedby the atomic bomb while at work. Most of them couldn’t get jobs andcouldn’t get married because of the wounds. Some of them have lived theirlives in bed. Soldiers can get pensions even if they are healthy, only becausethey served in the military. They invited people to set up an organization formobilized students. Its members went to the National Diet and complainedof their difficult situation to Diet members. Thanks to their action, from 1957,they were able to get disability pensions, so they were very pleased. Theysaid that they could spend their old age in peace. Also, bereaved familiescame to get survivor’s pensions. They appreciated it.Looking back, I think my life has been disastrous. I tried to live my lifeas best I could. I appreciated words of encouragement from a lot of peoplearound me. I hope for a peaceful world without wars. I want people to keep inmind that wars make lives a misery. A lot of people sacrificed their livesduring the war then, and Japan is now a peaceful country. They wanted tosurvive, but they couldn’t. We must not forget that. People can start wars, while people can also bring lasting peace. I want people to pass down today’speace to the next generations so that all the people can live happy lives. That’s why I am a member of the narrators who tell their war experiences tothe public. I am narrating my bitter experiences to children.I always give turtles made of five yen coins to the students who come tolisten to my story to study peace. I say to them, “Five yen means connection, because we pronounce both words “go-e-n”. Now I have made a connectionwith you. A turtle can live longer than any other animal. We can live to beone hundred years old without wars these days. Whenever you see this turtle, please remember that you must not start wars. I hope you will live a happylife. It is a pity that nuclear weapons have not been abolished yet, eventhough sixty years have passed since the first atomic bomb was dropped inHiroshima. I will appeal to the public to abolish nuclear weapons as long as Ilive. I will continue to work in order to achieve my long-cherished desire.Resident in Fuchu-cho, Aki-gun, Hiroshima PrefectureBombed at the age of fourteen.
