概要

eigo13

I lost my way because there were no buildings that used to be there untilyesterday. I didn’t know which way I should take. I heard that the areawhere students of Hiroshima Ichijo (Municipal girls’ school) were workingwas damaged fiercely and there were a lot of burnt bodies near there, so itwas already impossible to find survivors. On that day (the 7th ) we couldnot find my daughter Teruko. In the early morning of the 8th, we managed to go out and come to theplace where the Kokaido Hall presently stands. We found a girl whoseface was rather clean among the crowd of dead bodies. She was slightlydamaged, miraculously only a part of her hair was burnt. I moved to theside of her feet, and my husband to that of her face, and we stared at herclosely. I recognized her and said “We’ve found Teruko,” And my husbandsaid “She has a different face.” In a few seconds, while we were lookingat her face, white bubbles came out from her nose making a noise thensuddenly, blood came out like a fountain from her nose. I thought she hadbeen waiting for us to come. I wish I could have come there earlier.” I heldTeruko’s body and cried. I felt as if she were alive. But the truth was thather body was stiff like a mummy, and her arms and legs were like a bar. They were like small dried fish. She had been there for those two daysunder the sun since the morning of the 6th. A group of survivors collectedthe dead bodies and cremated them. We were very grateful to them. Wecould take Teruko’s body home and committed her body to the flames. That sad memory was brought back thirteen times. On the 6th of everyyear, my husband buys a big tomato and puts it on her grave. “This year, Igot a big tomato. Please eat it to your heart’s content. The tomato we ateon that day was small, wasn’t it?”We will never forget Teruko’s cheerful voice and her kindness. Theywill be alive forever in our minds.
