Before long, the fever went over forty degrees Celsius. The hospital wasin a rural area and the village was in chaos at the last minute of the war.Since it was impossible to get ice, Nobuo was cooled down by the water froma well. Every time I changed the wet cloth on his forehead, a bunch of hairfell out as if he got a hair cut in a barbershop. I had no idea what to do.Though I consulted with the doctor, he had no ideas either.It makes more sense now and it was a matter of course that the doctorcouldn’t find any solution. Nobody in the world knew how the atomic bombdestroys a human body and how the body should be cured. Even more, wedidn’t know that bomb was an atomic bomb at that time.After the day Nobuo died, August 28th, people started to say that moxacautery was good or the numbers of white blood cells decrease in that disease.I had no intention to blame the doctor at all and now it is the same as well.However, I hate the people who decided to drop the atomic bomb and killtons of innocent women and children. I hate the people who forced us to fightthis war, in which we couldn’t find any scope for winning. They kept forcingus to fight until the end, knowing we didn’t have any scope for winning. Ihate them. I hate them all.While Nobuo was suffering from a high fever he shouted, “I’m amember of Municipal Junior High school. I don’t want to lose to the juniorhigh students of Okinawa. Here I go.” I guess he was having the dream offighting with the enemies.The school distributed three or four books to each one of the students,worried that the school building might be burnt down. Nobuo was worriedabout the books he lost in the calamity. He would often be worried and say“Dad! Instead of me, please apologize to my teacher about the books. Do youknow how much they cost?” Also he said “If I was not in this condition, Iwould go by myself. But I can’t go. Dad, please go instead of me.”
